Performed by six of the finest musicians linked to the world-renowned Royal Northern College of Music, including Malcolm Layfield (Head of Strings) and Chris Hoyle (Deputy Head of Strings and formerly of Sheffield).

This elegant evening is in memory of David Harvey, who died at St Luke’s in November 2011, and is promoted by David’s family.

Contemporary Music Summer School

The CoMA (Contemporary Music for All) Contemporary Music Summer School takes place on 29 July to 4 August 2012 at Bangor University, Wales.

The course is open to musicians of all abilities who are passionate or curious about contemporary music.

Tutors include Lore Lixenberg (Mezzo-soprano), Mary Dullea (Piano), Joby Burgess (Percussion), Larry Goves (Composer), Adam Swayne (Composer/Conductor) and Zac Gvirtzman (Multi-instrumentalist/Composer).

Prices from £245
Full-time students are eligible for a bursary of £125 towards the fees.
Concessions of £85 are also available to those on low incomes.

3 Matters Arising
Millhouses Methodist Church: Matt has paid the fees.
Posters: Need more A5 and A6 posters/leaflets next time (+50) Action: Committee to check with members to find out which size of poster worked best.
Bookings: Barry to firm booking for Eccleshall Parish Church for concert 14 December 2013.
Practice-a-thon: Barry has received these materials. Action: Sara to put item in newsletter for suggestions from members on the form this should take.
Storage cupboards: Now built and in use. Still awaiting the bill.
Ceilidh: Sara has approached Clare and Brian and is awaiting Clare to get back with suggested dates.
Raising the fees: Action: Committee to implement the policy agreed at the AGM 2009, viz: Full fee £40 per term, Concession fee for F/T students/unemployed/retired £30 per term, fees waived for under 18s. This to take effect September 2012. Members need to amend their standing orders with bank. Any member unable to meet the fees to talk to a committee member.

4 Lessons for Timpani
Sally, Timps player, may be interested in a ‘lesson’ for our new timps. Committee agreed. Action: Martin to check availability with Mick Godber and rates. A system is required for moving timps before/after rehearsals. Action: Sally to be asked to organise a team of volunteers at next rehearsal. Transporting the timps to concerts is undertaken by Sara/Stuart but they require help. Action: Sally to be asked to help co-ordinate this with Sara/Stuart.

5 Logo
Committee was asked to revisit the decision taken on the logo. After discussion it was agreed that the decision taken stands.

6 Attendance document
Guidance on this is on our website. It was agreed to highlight this at
the next AGM.

7 Coffee break
Committee had been asked to revisit the new arrangements by several members. After discussion we agreed to reconstitute a proper coffee break and to experiment with a self service arrangement to keep the break to a manageable length. Action: Sara to investigate procurement of hot water urn along with disposable cups and will ask some members to volunteer setting this up/looking after it. To be instituted after the forthcoming concert.

8 Chairs setting
We reviewed how this was working. There is still a small team of volunteers who commit each week to this plus a shifting band of other members who help out. It seems a fluid rrangement but so far is working out.

9 A.O.B.
Chamber music weekend: Polly Ives has replied to Jeremy’s request positively. Agreed to defer main discussion of this item to meeting when Mari present.
Charitable status: Matt circulated a document for discussion. Agreed this will be item for discussion on next agenda.

In case you haven’t spotted it, we now have a member directory on the new website and you will find it here. It is now a searchable directory, so, for example, you can type “john” in the grey box beside where it says “search users” and then click the “search users” button. This will match all members whose name includes “john”. You can also easily search for someone in a section by typing the name of their instrument, e.g. “oboe”.

A couple of things to be aware of:

The database is only accessible to playing members who are logged in to the site. If you are not already logged in to the site and you click the link above, you will be prompted to login. There are still a few people who have not yet registered on the new site. If you are one of them then please do so by clicking here.
The database also contains individuals who have applied for membership of the orchestra but are not yet playing members.
Photos are included only for those people who have supplied one – if you haven’t then please let me know and either supply an image or I’ll arrange to take a photo of you at a forthcoming rehearsal.

Please let me know if you have any questions or problems in using this feature.

Missing music

Hello everyone

We are still short of two pieces of music – one I think I have tracked down, but a violin part from the Delius is still missing.

The item is -

Delius Summer Evening – 2nd violin – part no. 8 (8 in top left of 1st page of part).

Could everyone please check folders, bags, etc to see if this can be located – everyone includes no-string players as it is easy to ‘scoop’ music up unintentionally. And let me know as soon as poss if anyone finds it!!

Final rehearsal of term and other matters

The final rehearsal is on the 16th July. It is likely to be at St Mark’s Broomhill – where we will be able to use their mighty organ. We will play through some of the Saint-Saens and Mozart symphonies, but not neccesarily the entire pieces. As in previous years, friends and family will be welcome to come along, as long as you explain to them that we won’t have got the pieces up to performance standard! We will then have some drinks and nibbles.

Also, if you know of any good pianists who would like to play in the Saint-Saens (it requires a piano duet) please let me know.

Don’t forget that Robin Ireland will be returning to talk to us all on the 18th June, when we will be playing the Bruch with him.

Finally, violas, cellos and double basses, on the weekend of 10th – 12th August I am going on an orchestral weekend at Ellesmere College in Shropshire. We will be playing Elgar’s 1st Symphony and Gershwin’s Cuban Overture. Cost – £115. I believe there are still vacancies for the above instruments so if you’re interested do let me know and I’ll put you in touch with the organiser.

Saturday Rehearsal

The rehearsal is from 11.00 to 2.00. We will start with the Beethoven. It is impossible to say how long we will need on this, but we may have finished with it by about 12.15. We will then do the Shostakovich then the Delius. It is at Ecclesall Parish Church. It will be appreciated if some people arrive for 10.30 to help set up.

We still have 200 tickets to sell by May 12th. It would be such a shame to have half an audience to watch our hard work. Equally, we don’t want everyone turning up on the door only to be disappointed.

To be sure of a full house we need everyone in the orchestra to sell at least four tickets. Have you sold yours yet? If not, please buy them from Sara at any forthcoming rehearsal. Please don’t leave it until the last minute.

Your ideas for “practice-a-thon”

The committee would like to gauge the leel of interest amongst members of the orchestra to participate in a “practice-a-thon” event. You can read all about this here, but here’s a little info:

Practice-a-thon is an annual UK-wide fundraising campaign organised by CLIC Sargent. Pupils and young performers can get sponsored to practice for upcoming exams or a show, or put on a Practice-a-thon concert or performance in aid of CLIC Sargent. They can have fun, develop their musical, singing and dancing skills and help children and young people with cancer at the same time.

What does taking part involve?

There are many easy ways you can be part of Practice-a-thon. Here are some ideas:

Sponsored practice – many different groups choose to do this and it’s a great way to make sure everyone can join in. This can be excellent preparation for their exams or an upcoming show or concert
Variety show – encourage pupils to organise a ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ style show for the group or school
Hold a collection at your end of term production, or Christmas concert or show

Who can take part?
The event is for everyone, any age, ability and all instrumental, musical, singing and dancing styles. We are encouraging all schools, music, singing and dance classes, choirs, orchestras and groups to get involved.

Please speak to a member of the committee to let us know if you would be interested in participating in an event, and let us know your suggestions and ideas of what kind of event we might organise.

SingSoc’s Summer Concerts

On Friday 4th May, 7:30pm, in the Library Theatre (Surrey Street), the Socii Cantorum chamber choir will be taking on the challenge of Purcell’s “Fairy-Queen”. This tricky but fantastic work features some of Purcell’s finest theatrical music and the choir will be performing the work semi-staged.

Then on Saturday 12th May, 7:30pm, in the Victoria Hall (Norfolk Street), our Chorus and Ladies’ Choir will perform an evening of beautiful French music. This will include Fauré’s majestic “Requiem”, Poulenc’s “Litanies à la Vierge Noire” and Langlais’ “Messe solennelle”.

Tickets for each of these concerts will be £6 for adults and £4 for students and concessions and can be bought on the door.

We rely greatly upon the revenue we generate from concerts as students are unable to pay large membership costs so we really appreciate all the support we can get!
